God Bless America!

Tuesday 20 January 2009 @ 5:58 am

The famous online encyclopedia known as Wikipedia defines “hope” as “a belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one’s life; the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best”.

On this, the day of the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States of America, I believe all fair-minded citizens of our great nation, and in fact, of the world, can do nothing less than find hope that our future will be brighter for the efforts in the coming four years of the man who will arguably the most powerful leader in the world. Hope is indeed a beautiful thing and something that Barack Obama has talked and written about extensively. One need only reference his book “The Audacity of Hope“.

It doesn’t really matter whether you are a Republican, Democrat, Libertarian or Independent, it really is incumbent on all of us to hope for the best for our new President. In fact, I would challenge each of us to do something even more powerful than simply offer hope for our President and our country–offer prayer!

As Pope Benedict XVI was quoted to have said, “Without prayer there is no hope, only illusion.”

May God continue to bless America!

A New Year’s Blessing

Thursday 1 January 2009 @ 6:10 am

For his own quiet time of reflection, meditation and spiritual refreshment, famed American philosopher Elbert Hubbard would collect poems and other writings. In 1923, he assembled and published his Scrap Book of such works.

As this New Year dawns, allow me to share this poem from Hubbard’s Scrap Book by W. R. Hunt. Entitled “A Morning Wish”, I hope you find it as in inspirational as do I.

The sun is just rising on the morning of another day, the first day of a new year. What can I wish that this day, that this year, may bring to me?

Nothing that shall make the world of others poorer, nothing at the expense of others; but just those few things which in their coming do not stop with me, but touch me rather, as they pass and gather strength:

A few friends who understand me, and yet remain my friends.
A work to do which has real value without which the world would feel the poorer.
A return for such work small enough not to tax unduly anyone who pays.
A mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail be not blazed.
An understanding heart.
A sight of the eternal hills and unresting sea, and of something beautiful the individual hand has made.
A sense of humor and the power to laugh.
A little leisure with nothing to do.
A few moments of quiet, silent meditation.
The sense of the presence of God.

And the patience to wait for the coming of these things, with the wisdom to know them when they come.

Happy New Year!
